Living in London you can always spot the tourists. It’s not the outfits, the stopping on the wrong side of the tube escalator, standing on the pavement and pointing at various monuments, it’s that they are all so exhausted.
When you are paying through the nose for your accommodation it’s only natural that you would want to get the most out of your London experience, which of course means cramming as many activities in as possible right? Wrong!
In my opinion at least, tourists tend to try and cram too much into their day and as a result, you can see them in restaurants in the evening looking the worse for wear. Much better to pick one activity per day I think.
Some ideas for the day:
- Carnaby street shopping
Spend a morning shopping on the iconic street and roam around oxford street while you’re there. Have lunch while you’re out then head back to your accomodation for a rest in the afternoon so your fresh for dinner.
- Harry Potter world
Honestly I’ve never seen any of the movies but there are more American tourists in London to check out this movie landmark than are here for the Royal palaces. There must be something to it!
- London eye
Great views of London – does more need to be said.
- Leicester Square
You might think this is an odd suggestion. But hear me out. There are great restaurants in London’s Chinatown, just off the square, or you could catch a classic movie projected on 70mm, if you’re lucky at the famous Prince Charles Cinema.
- Late afternoon at the pub
Even though your might be in London on holiday, pretend you’re a local and have some ‘after work pints’ and pork scratchings at one of the great pubs in the city. A few of my favourites while I was there: The Rylston in Fulham, Ye old Cheshire cheese – one of the oldest pubs in London, The coach and horses in Clapham.
If you come to London make sure you check out my guide to getting into, and around London, do one big activity per day. Don’t wake up exhausted the second morning in.
